Japanese Particles wa, ga, wo, ni, de – Nepali Guide

Japanese particles grammar study visual for Nepali beginners

Japanese particles are short words placed after nouns or phrases. They show the role of each part of a sentence: topic, subject, object, destination, time or place of action.

For Nepali learners, particles become easier when they are learned inside complete sentence patterns rather than as single translated words.

は (wa): Topic and Contrast

は introduces what the sentence is about. Although written は, it is pronounced wa when used as a particle.

私はネパール人です。
Watashi wa Nepāru-jin desu.
म नेपाली हुँ।

今日は忙しいです。
Kyō wa isogashii desu.
आज चाहिँ व्यस्त छु।

は can also show contrast: コーヒーは飲みますが、お茶は飲みません。 “I drink coffee, but not tea.”

が (ga): Subject and Identification

が identifies the subject, introduces new information or emphasises who or what performs an action.

  • だれ来ましたか。— Who came?
  • 田中さん来ました。— Tanaka came.
  • います。— There is a cat.
  • 日本語好きです。— I like Japanese.

は vs が

SentenceMeaning and focus
私は学生です。As for me, I am a student. A general statement about the topic.
私が学生です。I am the student. Identifies or emphasises “I.”
この店は安いです。As for this shop, it is cheap.
この店が一番安いです。This shop is the cheapest. Identifies the shop.

At beginner level, remember: は presents a topic; が often identifies the subject or introduces it as new information. The difference becomes clearer through repeated examples.

を (o): Direct Object

を marks the thing directly affected by an action. It is normally pronounced o.

  • 読みます。— I read a book.
  • 飲みます。— I drink water.
  • 日本語勉強します。— I study Japanese.
  • 写真撮ります。— I take a photo.

に (ni): Destination, Time, Recipient and Existence

に has several common roles. Learn each role through a separate sentence pattern.

RoleExampleMeaning
Destination学校に行きます。go to school
Time七時に起きます。wake up at seven
Recipient先生に聞きます。ask the teacher
Existence机の上に本があります。there is a book on the desk

で (de): Place of Action and Means

で marks where an action happens or the means used to perform it.

  • 図書館勉強します。— study at the library
  • レストラン食べます。— eat at a restaurant
  • 電車行きます。— go by train
  • 日本語話します。— speak in Japanese

に vs で

This is one of the most common beginner difficulties:

  • 学校行きます。— school is the destination
  • 学校勉強します。— school is the place where studying happens
  • 部屋机があります。— the desk exists in the room
  • 部屋本を読みます。— reading happens in the room
