Japanese news articles are useful for JLPT N2 and N1 because they train formal vocabulary, dense kanji compounds, long sentences, paragraph structure and inference. They should supplement—not replace—level-appropriate grammar study and timed JLPT practice.
Start at the Right Difficulty
- Transition stage: simplified news with furigana and short paragraphs
- N2 stage: standard news reports on familiar topics
- N1 stage: editorials, analysis, policy, economics and opinion writing
If every sentence contains several unknown words, choose an easier source. The best material is challenging enough to teach you something but readable enough to follow the main argument.
The Five-Step Reading Method
1. Preview
Read the headline and first paragraph. Predict the topic, people, place and central event.
2. Read Without a Dictionary
Finish one section before looking up words. Mark only vocabulary that blocks the main meaning.
3. Map the Paragraphs
Label each paragraph: background, claim, reason, contrast, example, result or conclusion.
4. Check Key Language
Look up important words and grammar, then record collocations and one sentence—not isolated translations alone.
5. Summarise
Write the main point in one or two sentences in Japanese, Nepali or both. Then reread the article several days later.
Recognise News Structure
News reports often present the most important facts early, followed by details, quotations and background. Opinion writing is different: it develops a position through contrast, evidence and conclusion.
Watch for structure signals:
- 一方 — on the other hand
- しかし — however
- そのため — therefore / for that reason
- 〜によると — according to
- 〜とみられる — it is believed / expected
- 〜にもかかわらず — despite
- つまり — in other words

How to Handle Long Sentences
- Find the final verb or predicate.
- Identify the main topic and subject.
- Mark quotation boundaries ending in と.
- Separate relative clauses before nouns.
- Locate contrast, cause and condition markers.
- Restate the sentence in simpler Japanese.
Build Reading Speed Safely
Speed comes from repeated accurate reading, not from rushing. Track how long an article takes, but do not use one fixed time rule for every passage. Text length and question type vary.
- First reading: focus on accuracy and structure.
- Second reading: reduce dictionary use.
- Third reading: set a reasonable time limit and summarise.
- JLPT practice: use official-style questions under full section timing.
Weekly Advanced Reading Plan
