The Business Japanese Proficiency Test (BJT) measures how well a learner understands and responds to Japanese in business-related situations. It uses a score from 0 to 800 and reports a level from J5 to J1+.
This guide explains how to prepare through workplace listening, reading, context, keigo and timed practice. It does not guarantee a particular score, job, visa or career outcome.
Who Should Consider the BJT?
- Learners who already understand everyday Japanese and want workplace-focused practice
- Workers who use Japanese for emails, meetings, customers, reporting or telephone calls
- Job seekers who want evidence of business-Japanese communication ability
- Advanced JLPT learners who need more situational and professional language practice
The BJT and JLPT have different purposes. You do not need to treat one as a compulsory “next step” after the other.
What to Practise
Listening
- workplace conversations
- telephone calls
- instructions and schedule changes
- speaker relationship and intention
- important numbers, dates and conditions
Reading
- emails and notices
- charts and schedules
- reports and short documents
- formal vocabulary and collocations
- finding the purpose and required action
Three-Month Preparation Framework
Three months may be enough for some learners to organise their preparation, but it is not a universal timeline. Extend the plan when your foundation or available study time requires it.
Month 1: Workplace Language Foundation
- Review polite Japanese and essential particles.
- Learn common workplace nouns, verbs and fixed expressions.
- Study the difference between teineigo, sonkeigo and kenjougo.
- Practise short reports, requests, confirmations and apologies.
- Read one business-style email or notice several times each week.
Month 2: Situational Practice
- Practise identifying who is speaking and why.
- Listen for changes in plans, priorities and deadlines.
- Read documents together with charts, images or schedules.
- Compare responses that are grammatically possible but socially inappropriate.
- Begin timed sets and record why each wrong option is wrong.
Month 3: Timed Review
- Complete longer mixed practice sessions.
- Review recurring vocabulary and context mistakes.
- Repeat weak listening clips after checking transcripts.
- Practise reading quickly without translating every sentence.
- Use official or reputable BJT-format material to become familiar with the test interface and question style.
Weekly Study Schedule
| Day | Main focus |
|---|---|
| Monday | Business vocabulary and collocations |
| Tuesday | Workplace listening and note-taking |
| Wednesday | Keigo and situation-appropriate expressions |
| Thursday | Emails, notices and document reading |
| Friday | Meetings, reports and telephone phrases |
| Saturday | Timed mixed practice and error analysis |
| Sunday | Light review, repetition or rest |
How to Review a Wrong Answer
- Identify whether the problem was vocabulary, grammar, speed or context.
- Write the signal you missed: a negative, contrast, deadline or relationship.
- Explain why the chosen answer was inappropriate.
- Create one similar workplace example.
- Repeat the same question type later without looking at the answer.
Important Workplace Language
| Japanese | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 確認いたします。 | I will confirm. |
| 少々お待ちください。 | Please wait a moment. |
| 進捗をご報告します。 | I will report the progress. |
| 期限を変更できますか。 | Can the deadline be changed? |
| ご迷惑をおかけして申し訳ございません。 | We are sorry for the inconvenience. |
| ご検討のほど、よろしくお願いいたします。 | Thank you for your consideration. |
BJT and JLPT
| JLPT | BJT |
|---|---|
| General Japanese comprehension organised into N5–N1 levels | Business-related communication reported on a 0–800 scale and J5–J1+ levels |
| Useful for many education and employment contexts | Useful when workplace communication is directly relevant |
| Does not directly test speaking or writing production | Also evaluates comprehension and judgement through test tasks rather than a live speaking interview |
There is no simple universal conversion between a JLPT level and a BJT score. Performance depends on business-context familiarity, reading speed, listening ability and other factors.
Registration and Current Information
Test availability, fees, identity requirements and locations can change. Check the official BJT website and its authorised testing-provider information for your current location. Do not rely on an old article for a Nepal test centre, price or immigration rule.
Common Preparation Mistakes
- Memorising business vocabulary without learning the situation
- Using difficult keigo incorrectly instead of clear polite Japanese
- Treating BJT and JLPT levels as directly equivalent
- Practising only reading and ignoring listening
- Taking timed tests without reviewing mistakes
- Assuming one score guarantees employment or immigration benefits
- Using unverified registration information from social media or old blogs
Readiness Checklist
- I can understand the purpose of common business emails and notices.
- I can follow schedule changes and final decisions in conversations.
- I can distinguish respectful, humble and ordinary polite forms.
- I can identify the appropriate response for the relationship.
- I have practised under time pressure.
- I review mistakes by cause, not only by score.
