A Japanese job-interview self-introduction, or 自己紹介 (jiko shōkai), should be short, relevant and easy to follow. Its purpose is not to tell your entire life story. It should help the interviewer understand who you are, what experience you bring and why you fit the role.
Recommended Structure
- Polite opening and thanks
- Name and country or current location
- Education or relevant work experience
- One or two strengths connected to the position
- Reason for applying or desired contribution
- Polite closing

Choose Strengths You Can Prove
Avoid empty claims such as “I am perfect” or “I can do everything.” Select one or two strengths and support them with an example.
- 協調性 (kyōchōsei): ability to cooperate
- 責任感 (sekininkan): sense of responsibility
- 継続力 (keizokuryoku): persistence
- 時間管理 (jikan kanri): time management
- 学習意欲 (gakushū iyoku): willingness to learn
What Not to Include
- information that is unrelated to the job
- negative comments about a previous employer
- invented qualifications or exaggerated language ability
- private family details unless directly relevant
- a memorised speech that is too long to follow
Politeness and Body Language
- Enter only after being invited.
- Greet clearly and bow naturally.
- Sit after the interviewer asks you to sit.
- Speak at a steady speed and finish each sentence clearly.
- Maintain attentive posture without staring.
- Thank the interviewer before leaving.
Interview customs vary by company and format. Focus on respect, clarity and following the interviewer’s instructions rather than performing an exaggerated bowing routine.
Prepare Three Versions
- 20 seconds: name, background and current role
- 60 seconds: experience, strength and contribution
- 2 minutes: a longer version with one concrete achievement
Do not force a fixed length when the interviewer gives a specific instruction. Follow the requested time.
Practice Method
- Write the first version using only true details.
- Ask a teacher or proficient speaker to check unnatural expressions.
- Record yourself and remove unnecessary words.
- Practise without reading the script.
- Prepare follow-up answers about every claim you make.
- Simulate the interview with a friend and random questions.
Common Follow-Up Questions
— Why did you apply to this company?
— Tell us your strengths and weaknesses.
— What have you worked hardest on?
— How do you want to grow in Japan?
— Do you have any questions?
Final Checklist
- Every detail is true and relevant.
- The introduction fits the requested time.
- I can explain my experience without reading.
- I can support each strength with an example.
- I know how my experience connects to the position.
- I have prepared thoughtful questions for the company.
